African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon)

African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) may be confused for ebony, but since it is a rosewood this is inaccurate. It imported mainly from Mozambique and Tanzania and has become famous for its absolutely outstanding resonance. It has thus earned its place in the making of woodwinds, especially clarinets, oboes, and flutes. It is also traditionally used in the great Highland bagpipe. Because of its hardness and density, it provides a particularly high-quality, harmonious sound.
The wood ist very hard and heavy. Its blackish-violet color and grain is special and very subtle, but can usually be seen upon closer inspection once finished.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
