Cocus (Brya ebenus) comes from West India and Central America. It is also called Jamaica ebony. Despite the name, it has absolutely nothing to do with coconut palms. The tree reaches a height of 40-50m, but the trunk diameter remains rather small.
The cocus wood is hard and dense. It can be worked excellently and is a sought-after wood for turning. It is mainly used for woodwind instruments or brush backs. The heartwood is brown to reddish-brown, interspersed with dark lines and also reddish spots. The sapwood is light yellow.
