Mammoths are an extinct genus of elephant with species that lived during the Pliocene and Pleistocene in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) lived in the Late Pleistocene during the last Ice Age in Europe and northern Asia. Other species are more likely to be hairless. For a long time it was assumed that the woolly mammoth was already extinct by 10,000 BCE. Recent discoveries, however, show it disappeared from North-Eastern Europe only around 8,000 BCE. Whether it was excessive hunting by humans or extreme and rapid climate change that was responsible for its extinction is still a matter of debate.
These pieces all come from the Asian part of Russia, having been hidden in the permafrost, which thaws only for a few months each year.

In this piece, all existing cracks were filled with colored resin. This makes processing and handling a lot easier because there is no cracking in the thin-walled writing instrument tubes, in contrast to solid material.
