Chestnut Finishing Oil is an easy-to-apply tung oil from the renowned Chestnut company from Ipswich, England.
It is outstanding for creating a stable, waterproof, and heat-resistant surface. It leaves a matte to high gloss finish after several applications. Finishing Oil can be applied with a cloth (such as Chestnut Safety Cloths) or brush and requires a drying time of 6-8 hours between coats. It meets the EN71 standard, making it also suitable for use on children’s toys. Its properties also make it well suited for use on knife handles, which are sometimes put through their paces if they’re not constantly stored properly. I recommend sanding with a 500 grit or higher sandpaper and then using a lint-free cloth (such as Chestnut Safety Cloths) to apply the oil in 3-4 very thin layers. The results ares impressive.
Due to their very high natural fat content, it shouldn’t be used on cocobolo or thuja burl, since it will barely adhere.
