Canistel (pouteria campechiana) is an evergreen fruit tree from Central America. It grows mainly in southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. It is, however, also cultivated as a fruit tree in Southeast Asia and East Africa. The tree reaches a height of 5-10 metres, and even 20 metres on rare occasions. The bark secretes white latex when it is cut or damaged. In Central America, extracts from the bark are used as a remedy for skin diseases and fever. The yellow fruits are either eaten raw or are processed.
The burl wood is very hard, heavy and dense. The grain is very fine and light. The trunk wood is particularly used as construction timber.
