Catalpa or the common trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) belongs to the trumpet tree family and is a deciduous tree up to 18 m tall that occurs mainly in the United States. In Europe, it has also often been planted as an ornamental tree in parks and streets. Very old specimens sometimes have trailing branches that sprout roots and thus produce new trunks. Due to its spreading crown with large leaves and ravishing flowering, it has a breathtaking effect in the garden, especially on its own.
The wood is rather coarse-grained and light, yet it does not rot and is therefore well suited for outdoor projects. It is also used in cabinetmaking as well as furniture making due to its pretty light brown colouring and attractive grain. When working with it, it is important to remember that all parts of this tree are slightly toxic and therefore the wood can also cause allergic reactions when it comes into contact with the skin.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
