Golden Madrone (Nothaphoebe spp.) comes from southeastern Asia and is a subspecies of the laurel family. It is most commonly found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. It has a subtle menthol smell that is noticeable when working with it. The three-dimensional appearance of the polished burl is both massive and distinctive with a depth unlike any other wood. The grain growth is relatively large.
The wood is dense, hard, and medium-weight. It is wonderful to work with. Its unique grain means it is often used for decorative purposes such as fine pieces of furniture, knife handles, or guitar bodies.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
