Bocote (Cordia elaeagnoides) is similar to the rosewoods of the Dalbergia family, but is actually a different genus. It does have a similar hardness, structure, and a moderate fat content. The unique yellow and black color darkens over time into a light brown-black; in any care, this wood is used to great decorative effect. Especially in demand here is the rather rare version with eyes in the wood grain. The tree rarely grows higher than 120 feet and usually reaches a diameter of 12 to 16 inches, therefore making the available dimensions rather small. It is primarily located in Mexico and Central America.
The wood is hard, dense, and has a pleasant aroma as it is easily worked. It is used to make instruments, furniture, and crafts.
