The prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus) can live for up to 600 years, which is quite amazing its relatively small size (rarely more than 40 feet with a trunk diameter rarely hitting 30 inches and more commonly 4 to 8 inches across). It is primarily found the western Mediterranean, mainly France and Portugal. It can take shapes that could not be more different: it ranges from a creeping bush to a relatively large tree. The juniper is associated with mystical powers. The wood, the dry berries, and the needles have been used for millennia by the Germanic, Celtic, Slavic and even Tibetan tribes as a form of incense. Anyone who has had the chance to smell the resinous juniper wood is familiar with its quite fragrant scent. Fabulous.
The wood is medium hard, dense and can be wonderfully processed. The color is somewhat stronger against the German juniper. The pieces here are from France.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
