Black Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) ©JeLuFThe black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is one of three domestic European elderberry species and is also the most well-known. There are 30-40 species around the world. The elderberry grows mainly as a shrub or small tree, reaching no more than 30 feet tall. It is found across central Europe to western Siberia, Asia Minor, the Caucasus and Northern Africa. The fruit and bark have many uses in natural healing and have been used as dyes. The fruit is also edible.
Elderberry wood is hard and dense and can be worked well. It has a bright yellow color, but the branches and the root have a pronounced pith.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
