Makassar Ebony (Diospyros celebica)

Makassar Ebony (Diospyros celebica) is a very rare ebony, with a very striking striped effect. It is found on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and has been used for centuries as a very popular exotic wood for exclusive furniture, fine turning work, and is widely used in traditional Japanese homes. Japan is its main importer. Its name comes from its main export port of Makassar.
The wood is extremely hard, very heavy, and dense. Makassar is often brown striped, rarely with white-grey stripes, and, due to its rarity, one of the more expensive woods on the market.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
