The teak tree (Tectona grandis) is native to the monsoon forests of South and Southeast Asia. The wood is considered very valuable and is one of the most important export woods in Asia. The sapwood has a thickness of up to three centimetres. The heartwood has a yellow to dark brown colour.
Usually the wood of the teak tree is straight grained. So-called interlocked growth occurs rather rarely. Since some rubber is stored in the outer heartwood, it has a certain sticky-oily texture. In addition, the surface is rather dull, abrasion-resistant, acid-resistant and water-repellent. Furthermore, the wood contains secondary plant substances that are fungicidal and effective against insects. Due to several growth spurts per year, the trunk cross-section shows distinct growth zones, which are associated with the seasonal tropical climate.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
