The European smoke tree (Cotinus coggygria) is native to Central and Southern Europe, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and China. It grows mostly as a broad and bushy shrub to heights of just 10 to 15 feet. It does not have a very large trunk, usually no more than 4-6 inches across. The wood contains ingredients that have been used as dyes since ancient times.
The wood is hard, somewhat heavy, and tough. It is one of the exotic woods native to Europe and has an exceptional yellow-greenish color that is very stable.
