The holm oak (Quercus ilex) is an evergreen broadleaf native to the Mediterranean climate zone. It can be found in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Tunisia, but also on the Atlantic coast of France and around Lake Garda in Italy. The holm oak reaches heights up to 80 feet and can live for up to 500 years. Although the trunk diameters are usually smaller, they do sometimes measure as much as 5 feet across. Acorns, the fruit of the oak tree, is very important to the breeding of the Iberian pig and are specially planted in groves for this purpose.
The wood is hard, heavy, and very durable. It is very decorative and therefore highly sought after for crafts. It is also an extremely good firewood, but this, of course, would be a shame.
