Honduras mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) or real mahogany, American mahogany or caoba. It comes from Central and South America, but also India. Growth heights up to 70 meters are achieved up to trunk diameters up to 3.5 meters. The wood has been famous for hundreds of years, of course because of its excellent properties. Just the branch-free trunk sections sought after by the wood industry reach a good 25 meters. Unfortunately, there is hardly any real mahogany to be had.
The wood is rather light but very strong and therefore has excellent properties for many applications. It is extremely resistant to insects and fungi. The coveted genuine mahogany can be worked very well and is used for the finest furniture, musical instruments - especially guitars, woodturning and even in shipbuilding. It has a light reddish brown color and darkens under UV radiation.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
